About the event

Andrea La Nauze will be presenting on: Incentives to Shift EV Charging in a Sun-Soaked Grid

Abstract

Using a field experiment and minute by minute telematics data for 400 vehicles in Australia, we show that incentives substantially shift electric vehicle charging towards the middle of the day and away from peak times. Our results suggest that electric vehicles could act as “batteries on wheels’’ and support the energy transition by storing energy at times of peak solar electricity generation for use at times of peak electricity consumption. We find that incentives to reduce charging during peak times result in a 25% reduction in peak electricity consumption regardless of whether the household has rooftop solar. Further, incentives to increase charging during the middle of the day for households without rooftop solar increase midday charging by 25%. Despite lowering the cost of charging, our experiment also reduced overall charging and driving of participants.
